HawkCount History and Philosophy A Message from HawkCount’s Sponsors and Managers
Jason Sodergren started HawkCount in 2000 as a single watch site data entry system and database for the Holiday Beach hawk count. In 2001 Will Weber, then President of the Hawk Migration Association of North America and another regular hawk watcher at Holiday Beach, persuaded Jason to expand the system to accommodate multiple sites under the HMANA banner. Thus HawkCount.org was born.
HawkCount.org is a service to the hawk-watching community and is open to everyone free of charge and free of advertising. We intend to keep it that way. Much of the development of HawkCount.org has been accomplished by volunteers, Jason included, and the content is contributed voluntarily by hawkwatchers. Anyone can use this information, restricted only according to the wishes of the contributors who own the data.
We are pleased that HawkCount.org has also been a foundational piece in the Raptor Population Index Program (RPI), a collaborative endeavor aimed at producing regularly updated assessments of population trends and conservation status of North America’s migratory raptors. This represents hawk watchers’ and HMANA’s joint contribution to raptor conservation through scientifically credible knowledge of raptor populations.
The development of RPI and HawkCount has been supported by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. These grants end this year and it will be up to HMANA and the hawkwatching community to keep this important work and HawkCount moving forward – Now and Forever.

P.S. See below for two donation options. Thanks for helping us make HawkCount even more effective in serving the world’s largest migration monitoring network.
Why Support HawkCount.org?
HawkCount.org is largely your site! HMANA provides the framework, but you and your fellow hawk watchers count the hawks, enter the data, and view the results. Without your contributions and interest there would be no HawkCount. How important is it to you and other hawk watchers?
Over the past 10 years, HMANA has transitioned from collecting and storing hawk migration data on paper forms to a fully electronic data collection and archiving system. In 2010, HawkCount.org received more than 140,000 visits from over 40,000 different users located in 93 countries around the world and its contributors operated over 200 independent observation sites across the continent. This attests to the value of HawkCount to hawk watchers everywhere.
If you agree with HawkCount’s objectives and philosophy, outlined above, and find that HawkCount is useful and suits your interests, please consider becoming a sponsoring partner in the HawkCount enterprise.

Where Your Donation Goes
HawkCount.org requires a constant effort of physically maintaining servers, developing and improving its functionality, creating and updating content, transferring data from paper to electronic form, implementing elaborate curatorial procedures for archiving, backing up and releasing existing data, enhancing the reports that users can obtain from it, among many other tasks. Not all of this work can be done by volunteers and costs are incurred by HMANA to maintain and improve the system.
When you sponsor a site on HawkCount, your donation goes toward making this important work possible!
