September 13, 2005
Excel import
The excel import code has been updated and now handles a variety of input formats. Field order is autodetected (as long as a column header row is included). [More information...]

Enhancements to the count entry page
Several changes have been made to the count entry page.
  • No Count: A new checkbox has been added that, when checked, specifies that no count occurred during a period. This addition will allow entry of days where more than one count period exists. For example, if your site had coverage between 8am and 12pm, and then again between 2pm and 4pm on a particular day, you can now specify 8am and 4pm as the start/end times, and check the 'no count conducted' checkbox on the count entry pages for the 12pm and 1pm hours.
  • Reordering of the weather fields: The weather area of the count page has been reordered in order to more closely match the standard HMANA 'Green Sheet'.
  • Weather fields: UNKNOWN: Individual "Unknown" checkboxes have been added to each weather parameter. Use these checkboxes when information about that weather parameter is not available.
  • Count total check: The total number of hawks recorded for a given period is now reported after submission of that period's form. This can be used to double-check your entry as you go.
  • Javascript form field disable: Various form fields will now be disabled under certain conditions. For example, if a weather parameter 'unknown' checkbox is checked, the corresponding weather entry field will be disabled. Additionally, the "new observer" fields are disabled by default. Select "(NEW)" from the observer drop-down menu to enable the corresponding new observer entry field.

Lots of changes have been made to the hawkcount.org code in order to prepare for the upcoming move to a new server. Most of these changes were made in order to allow the system to work correctly in the new environment (updated web server software, updated database driver, updated PHP interpreter). These changes should not result in any change in the system's behavior.
If you encounter problems, error messages, or bugs, please let us know: email support@hawkcount.org to report any problems.

Revised email recipient list
A revised system for handling email report recipients has been added. This system replaces the previous recipient fields (under 'site settings') with three new recipient lists:
  • Private List: This list replaces the previous email-to: field under site settings. A site administrator can add or remove email addresses from this list by clicking the new 'Email Reporting' link in the main menu.

  • Other Lists: This list contains addresses of other email lists that the report should be distributed to. A site administrator can add or remove list addresses from this list by clicking the 'Email Reporting' link in the main menu, then clicking the 'Lists' tab in the list editor page.

NOTE: Please contact Hawkcount Support before adding external mailing lists; many lists require that we subscribe the hawkcount.org system to that list before they will accept posts.

The BIRDHAWK list is a special case and is not included in this list; see Site Settings for control over submission of reports to BIRDHAWK.

  • Subscribed HMANA Members: A soon-to-be-completed feature of the www.hmana.org web site will allow HMANA members to subscribe to reports from sites of interest. (This list is only applicable to sites with a public data policy.)

Each of these lists are represented by checkboxes on the Step 4 (Reporting) page of the data entry process; during data entry, the user submitting the day's data has full control over whether or not reports are sent to each of the above three lists.

Each subscribing address on each of these three lists can be independantly set to receive either plaintext email reports or enhanced HTML / MIME reports.

Bug Fix
Add User: Usernames must be unique. An error message was added when an attempt is made to add a user with the same username as an existing user. Previously, such an attempt would silently fail.

Feb. 24, 2004
Additions/Bug Fixes
  • 'No Count Conducted' checkbox added to entry screen. Checking this box during Step 1 of data entry causes the program to bypass most of the rest of the day's data entry steps. This checkbox allows indication of a day where no count was conducted. Weather, predictions, etc. can still be recorded for this day. 'No Count Conducted' is reported for such days on the email reports and on the daily summaries.

  • PDF 'Green Sheet' fixes: Several bugs were fixed in the PDF output.
    • Weather parameters are now reported correctly for fractional hourly periods.
    • Units for each weather parameter are now indicated correctly based on the site's weather profile
    • Wind speed ranges are now correctly reported
    • Layout problem on second page has been fixed (observer hour table was corrupted under certain conditions).
    • The term 'coordinator' has been replaced with 'official counter'.

  • Fields added to Site Settings: Year Founded, Site Topography, and Site History. These three fields will be made available through the site directory at hmana.org.

Feb. 18, 2004 Many recent updates performed between-seasons have included:
  • Site Settings page has been reorganized.
  • Field added to site settings: Directions to site. These directions will appear in the watch directory on http://hmana.org/
  • Excel export (under 'Admin Tools') has been rewritten. It now includes the capacity to optionally export all hourly data, as well as observer names, weather data, and per-species attribute break-down.
  • PDF greensheet export has been modified to run faster.

Feb. 2, 2004 Hawkcount.org has been moved to a faster network connection and a new server.

Jan. 14, 2004 A page caching system has been added to speed retrieval of already-generated summary pages.
